Walmart seeks to quell rumors about immigration raids in its stores
Hispanics in the Asheville-Hendersonville area have been on edge for several days because of rumored collaboration between federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and the giant retailer Walmart, which quickly responded that the rumors are "totally erroneous and without foundation."
"The rumors circulating via text message, and other means, about Walmart coordinating or supporting immigration raids in our stores are not true," Phil Keene, a Walmart spokesperson said in a statement emailed to La Voz Independiente. "These rumors are baseless and inaccurate. We think it's unfortunate that such unsubstantiated rumors are spread."
According to a version of the rumors which began to appear in telephone text messages over the past weekend, ICE agents were to begin having a presence at Walmart stores on March. 20. Like a high-tech game of telephone, the unverified information has quickly spread throughout the Spanish-speaking community of the mountains.
